Grand Slam Instructors:

Grand Slam U.S.A. offers 12 instructors.  Our lead instructor is Jim Hallman.   Jim has an extensive background working with little league, high school, college and professional players.   He has over 25 years experience as an instructor.  Jim has worked camps, clinics, and individual lessons throughout the country.  He also brings 17 years of experience as a college baseball coach and 5 years as a professional scout.  As owner and lead instructor of Grand Slam U.S.A. for the past 19 years Jim has averaged 55 hours of lessons per week each year.

All Grand Slam U.S.A. instructors have a minimum of 4 years college playing experience, and/or coaching experience, a year of instructional training in Grand Slam U.S.A., experience working with small groups and teams, continuing education throughout the year working camps around the country, going to sports conventions and working with local High School teams during the summer.  At Grand Slam U.S.A., we believe that its not what you’ve done, but how well you evaluate and communicate that will help a player improve their skills. Our ultimate goal is to help them get to the next level.

Garrett Hawkins:  Garrett has been at Grand Slam for 9 years.  He played four years at Valley High School and then two years at Grandview College. In 2006 he was the head freshman coach at Hoover High School. He is currently an assistant varsity coach at West Des Monies Valley High School.

Benn Stockton: Benn has been an instructor at Grand Slam for 6 years. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 2005, then finished his baseball career at Grand View College. He has coached our fall League for 5 years, and enjoys Sunday night team clinics. Benn was the 14U USSSA head coach in 2012 and is a volunteer assistant coach for Dowling High School. Benn also leads our High School Hitting Clinics for numerous central Iowa Baseball and Softball teams.

Mick Delaney: Mick has been an instructor at Grand Slam for the last 4 years. He attended Urbandale High School. After playing some baseball after high school Mick got into coaching. After coaching at Dowling Catholic for 2 years and is now the Head Varsity Assistant at Woodward Granger. Mick has also helped out with our 14U USSSA team for the past 3 years. He is also a coach for our High School Fall League.

Missey Allen: Missey has been an instructor at Grand Slam for eleven years.  She attended and played softball at Dowling Catholic High School, and went on to play at Central College. She has coached high school softball for eleven years, was a junior high coach for five years, and a pitching coach at Dowling for two years.

Amy Houston:  Amy has been an instructor at Grand Slam for 2 years coaching individual lessons, group clinics and outdoor summer & fall clinics. She attended Sergeant Bluff-Luton High School earning a Varsity starting position at 3rd base and received All State honors for 5 years (began in 8th grade) and still holds the stolen base record. Amy played softball and graduated from South Dakota State University. After college, she was the Hoover High School Assistant softball coach and continued as the Roosevelt High School Assistant coach for 2 years.

Will Scholer:  Will has been an instructor at Grand Slam for 5 years.  He attended Norwalk High School and was a 3 year starter for the Warriors.  After graduating in 2006, Will moved on to play Short Stop at Kirkwood, and Mount Mercy.

Trey Cook: Trey went to high school at Grandview Park Baptist. He then went on to play at Upper Iowa University, where he was a pitcher for 4 years. Trey has worked at Grand Slam for the last 2 years. In addition to being an instructor he has coached in our high school fall league for 2 seasons and is the Head Coach of our USSSA 14U Grand Slam Red team.

Jake DeBondt: Jake attended West Des Moines Dowling Catholic High School where he was a starting catcher for the Maroons. Jake was part of the 2011 State Championship Team. After high school he attended Grand View University. Jake started at catcher and played outfield. Jake graduated from Grand View in 2016. Jake is one of Grand Slam’s premier Catching Instructors.

Andrew Utterback: Andrew played at Sigourney High School in Sigourney, Iowa. Andrew went to Marshalltown CC for 2 years, then went to Alabama A&M University in the SWAC. He was a two time first team all conference player there, and 2014 Hitter of the year of the conference, and 2014 College Sports Madness Player of the Year. Andrew is an assistant coach for one of our USSSA club teams. He also runs clinics and helps out with Grand Slam camps.

Dalton Parrott: Dalton played at Dowling Catholic High School. His junior year Dalton led the team with a .476 batting average, while also leading the team with 22 stolen bases. His senior year he started on their 2011 State Championship team. After high school Dalton went on to play college baseball at North Dakota St. He has been an instructor for two years at Grand Slam and is the head coach of one of Grand Slam’s 14U USSSA teams.

Brandon Potts: Brandon went to Waukee high school. He batted .360 in his senior year for the Warriors. Brandon attended Grand View University where he started in Centerfield and hit lead off. Brandon has been an instructor at Grand Slam for 3 years. He helps out with club teams and leads numerous clinics during the year for Grand Slam.

Devon Jacobus: Devon played high school ball at Cedar Rapids Kennedy. Devon played 4 years as a utility infielder. He was part of the 2010 State Championship Team. In Devon’s junior year he earned first team all-state and then second team Team All-State senior year. He went on to play 4 years at Grand View University, primarily at second base. In his second year working for Grand Slam, Devon runs youth hitting clinics for both baseball and softball as well as helping out Grand Slam’s High School team clinics.

Tyler Abbott: Tyler spent his 4 years of High School baseball at Bellevue East High School in Bellevue, NE. As a 3-year varsity letterman Tyler earned.All-State honorable mention in Senior season.He than continued his baseball career spending 4 years playing baseball at Graceland University in Lamoni, IA. Tyler was a 2-time Daktronics Scholar-Athlete. Tyler now leads various Youth ClinIcs at Grand Slam USA.

Carver Stokes: Carver played his High School Baseball at Urbandale High School as a 2 year varsity letter winner. Carver played his college baseball at Grand View University for 3 years, he graduated in 2016, where he was the DH and 1st baseman. Carver has been doing lessons and clinics here at Grand Slam for 4 years and also is an Assistant Coach for our 14U Red team. Carver has led numerous clinics of youth and high school age players and runs our Summer, Winter, and Spring Break Youth camps.

Daniel Barnett: Daniel is new to Grand Slam, and to the Des Moines Area. Daniel is from Chicago where he played at Whitney Young High School, Dan played his college ball at Maryville University in St. Louis which is a D2 school in the GLVC where he was a Team Captain. He has played in many Summer ball Leagues across the Nation during his time in college, specifically Illinois, Wisconsin, and Mississippi. Daniel is a catcher by trade, and has had much experience giving lessons, coaching, and helping at camps in the Chicago area. He is a welcomed addition to the Grand Slam Team.

2017 Fall-Winter Clinics

Grand Slam USA announces September-December Softball and Baseball Clinics! Grand Slam will be offering Fall Youth clinics that will cover Hitting, Fielding, Pitching and Catching (positional) and Fundamentals for both Softball and Baseball.
